Joan and David Hammond              Dave & Joan Joan and Dave Hammond have been raising rhododendrons and azaleas for over 35 years and have one of the world's largest selections of beautiful and unique plants. They welcome you to visit their 7-acre "rhody" paradise where you'll find the largest selection of healthy plants anywhere. For a treat, visit the Hammonds' during peak blooming season, usually March through June.

Joan or David will help you select the right blend of plants to maximize your blooming season and color-range for show-stopping effects. Joan will help you to hand-select rhodys that won't grow too large (perfect for landscaping near the home) or she can show you fast-growing varieties (perfect for landscaping properties with large acreage). David will help you find those special shade or sun-loving species that grow especially well in your climatic zone. Whether you're just starting off or an old hand at planting rhododendrons and azaleas, there's always something new to see and experience at Hammonds' Acres of Rhododendrons.
The Hammonds' recommended top 12 mid-season blooming rhododendrons:
  • Black Sport - Has a magical deep violet color which is not replicated in other rhody species. The plant grows in sun or half-sun/half-shade. Grows 6-8 inches per year and reaches 5 feet in 10 years.
  • Blue Diamond - This is one of my favorites. It has prolific blue blooms which cover the plant and grows in full sun or half-sun/half-shade. Grows 2-4 inches per year and reaches 3 feet in 10 years.
  • David - An exceptional rhody with crimson red trusses. David grows 6 inches a year and reaches 5-feet in 10 years. David prefers half-shade and half-sun.
  • Kimbeth - Has deep pink blooms and reaches 3 1/2 feet after 10 years. Kimbeth will grow in full sun or in half-shade/half-sun.
  •
  • P. impeditum - This is my favorite mini rhody! It has saturated blue blooms which cover the plant. It grows slowly and is perfect for landscaping areas close to the home. This plant has a height of 18-24 inches after 10 years. P. impeditum will grow in full sun or half-shade/half sun.
  • Percy Wiseman - This is a very nice rhody with light pink blooms. It reaches four feet in 10 years and prefers full sun or half-shade/half sun.
  • Phyllis Korn - If you're looking for a great yellow bloomer Phyllis Korn is the one. It has an intricate brownish-yellow moulting in the throat of each bloom with butter yellow blooms. This rhody grows 6 to 8 inches per year and has a 10-year size of 5 feet. Phyllis grows in full sun or in half-shade/half-sun conditions.
  •
  • R. decorum (pink form)- Ah yes! This rhody has well-formed, fragrant, pink flowers and is a prize in any garden. R. decorun grows 6 inches per year and is 5-feet high after 10 years. This rhody is a real treasure!
  • Renoir - This rhody has beautiful red blooms and prefers growing in half-shade/half-sun. Renoir will grow 4-feet in 10 years.
  • Rockhill Parkay - Here's another great yellow bloomer which prefers half-shade/half-sun. The Rockhill Parkay will reach a 3-foot height in 10 years.
  • Trail Blazer - This is one of my favorite pink rhodys. It has dark speckling in the throat of each bloom which adds to its personality. It will grow in full sun or half-shade conditions and reaches a 10-year height of 3-feet.
  •
  • Yaku Angel - Here's a very nice compact bush with white flowers. It will grow in full sun or in half-shade/half sun and maintains a 2 1/2 height after 10 years.
